WHY WEDDINGS ARE GETTING MORE EXPENSIVE – AND WHAT COUPLES SHOULD KNOW NOW
What does a wedding really cost today – and why is an average figure often not enough for realistic budget planning?
For a recent report by the German news programme ZDFheute, Anna-Maria Rock was interviewed as press spokesperson of the Bund deutscher Hochzeitsplaner (Association of German Wedding Planners) and as an experienced wedding planner. She also brought in her practical experience from more than twelve years of professional wedding planning and her daily work as managing director of rockwedding.
The interview covered why the cost of a wedding has risen significantly in recent years, which areas have a particularly strong impact on the wedding budget and why couples should not plan their wedding solely on the basis of general averages. Factors such as the number of guests, the wedding venue, catering, staff, florals, furnishings, transport and logistics have a direct effect on the total cost.
Anyone planning a wedding today therefore needs not only inspiration but above all realistic cost planning and clearly defined priorities. As wedding planners, we see again and again that budgets fail less because of big wishes than because of cost items that were not fully considered at the start of the planning.
In the ZDFheute interview, Anna-Maria Rock shares her assessment of the current development of wedding costs and explains what couples should look out for if they want to plan their wedding budget realistically and bring their ideas into line with their financial means.
A realistic wedding budget doesn’t start with averages – it starts with the question of which priorities really matter to you as a couple.
REALISTIC RATHER THAN FLAT-RATE
Planning your wedding budget: which costs couples should really consider
If you want to plan a wedding, you shouldn’t base your wedding budget solely on general averages. How high the cost of a wedding actually turns out depends, among other things, on the number of guests, the venue, the catering, the desired schedule and the couple’s personal priorities. The venue, food and drinks in particular are often among the biggest cost items, as many services are charged per guest.
Realistic wedding and cost planning therefore starts with a clear list of priorities: which elements are essential for your dream wedding, where are compromises possible and which wishes are optional? In addition to the obvious expenses, couples should also consider possible additional costs – for example for staff hours, technology, transport, furniture, cleaning or extending the celebration.
As an experienced wedding planner, Anna-Maria Rock helps couples build their wedding budget transparently and use the available funds in a targeted way. It is not about saving in as many places as possible. What matters is investing the budget where it makes the biggest difference for the couple and the guest experience. A professional wedding planner can also recognise early on which quotes are fully calculated and where additional costs could arise later.
All your questions about wedding costs and the wedding budget
The cost of a wedding depends heavily on the number of guests, the region, the venue and personal preferences. Flat-rate averages are therefore only a first orientation. If you are planning a wedding with around 80 guests, you should consider not only the venue, catering and drinks but also costs for staff, decoration, music, photography, technology, transport and possible extra hours.
A realistic wedding budget starts with a clear list of priorities. Couples should decide which services are essential, where compromises are possible and which wishes remain optional. It is also advisable to plan a financial buffer for unexpected expenses.
The biggest cost factors are often the venue, the catering, the drinks and the number of guests. Many services are charged per person, so even a slightly smaller guest list has a noticeable effect on the overall wedding budget.
You can save sensibly above all where it doesn’t affect the couple’s personal priorities. A buffet, for example, can be cheaper than a seated menu. A smaller guest list, a venue outside a big city or a DJ combined with a live musician can also ease the budget.
Additional costs often arise from extended staff hours, cleaning, technology, power connections, transport, set-up and breakdown, furniture or external toilets. Curfews, corkage and fees for external vendors should also be checked before booking.
A wedding planner can make sense even on a limited budget, because quotes can be compared better, hidden extra costs identified and priorities defined early on. It is important that the wedding planner’s fee is included transparently in the overall wedding planning.
A budget buffer is recommended for unforeseen expenses. Especially if the number of guests changes, extra staff hours are needed or short-notice adjustments are made, this financial leeway can help without having to cut important parts of the wedding.
Higher staff, energy, transport and purchasing costs affect almost all vendors. Prices have therefore risen significantly, especially for catering, drinks, laundry, logistics and venues.
Conclusion: good wedding planning starts with realistic numbers
A wedding doesn’t have to be maxed out in every area to be special. What matters is that the budget fits your own priorities and that all costs are considered transparently from the start. Planning early, comparing quotes carefully and making conscious decisions creates the best basis for a relaxed wedding day.
